So far into the infancy of his tenure he loves what he is seeing. He noted that he and coach Larry Drew have become fast friends and Drew has embraced the progressive philosophy that Ferry is implementing. Ferry noted that he believes the coaching staff and the player personnel department are very strong and willing to put in the time commitment that it will take to achieve excellence.
When asked about the strengths of the team Ferry respond with, Depth, Speed, Shooting and Front Court scoring.
"I really like the front court, with (Al) Horford, (Josh)Smith, and Zaza(Pachulia), we are going to get a lot out of them." Ferry said.
Ferry also likes what he sees in the chemistry of the guys so far, he also added that this is a "good group of guys." The core group's usage will go up due to the departure of Average Name, Average Game, Joe Johnson. I said that, not Ferry. The roles of some of the players will also have to evolve with Johnson's departure as well. Ferry did say that from the few work outs they have had he has noticed that Kyle Korver has become a very local member of the squad.
When asked about how he planned on improving the team Ferry gave three answers;
"We look to improve through the draft, free agency and trades." This leads me to believe that Josh Smith could be leaving town if the team doesn't compete. When pressed about Smith, Ferry would only say this about him;
"Josh is a really good player, he is a defensive game changer, on the offensive end he is a strong scorer and I really like his passing, really like how he passes. He's had a strong career here and we are going to continue to push him."
Ferry has very high expectations for this team. He believes that they are a championship caliber team that will compete. I tend to disagree with him on that, but he is sold on the Hawks' competing this season. I think Atlanta has made a very good hire in Ferry, but I think the road may be long. This team needs to be reworked, they are not going to beat a Miami, Boston, Philly or Indiana with this squad. So Hawks' fans, don't be shocked when "J-Smoothe" is dealt during the season. Ferry made no mention that he would or was even interested, but a team with Josh Smith as its best player is not a team that is going to be winning a title anytime soon.
